Assessment of Fluoride Removal from Drinking Water by Calcium Phosphate Systems

چکیده
Static defluoridation of high fluoride (10-12 ppm) water by sixteen different combinations of tricalcium phosphate (TCP), bone char (BC), hydroxyapatite (HAP), and related substances has been investigated. Defluoridation of 100 mL of the water by 300 mg of relatively insoluble phosphates is only 60-70 percent complete. Defluoridation is 30 percent more efficient, however, when a more soluble phosphate is present, which suggests that defluoridation by TCP, BC, and HAP could be similarly improved. The combination of 300 mg BC plus 23 mg monocalcium phosphate (MCP) per 100 mL of high fluoride water appears to be the most efficient, reducing the fluoride concentration from 10.4 mg/L to 0.6 mg/L by coprecipitation over 24 hr at pH 6.5-8.5.

Use of bauxite from active Iranian mines for the removal of fluoride from drinking water
Background: Fluoride plays an important role in bone and dentin mineralization; however, excess fluoride intake is harmful to mankind. Methods: This study evaluated the performance of bauxite from active Iranian mines in removing fluoride from drinking water. The effects of pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, and fluoride concentration on defluoridation and removal efficiency were determined. Ki...
متن کاملReactivity Improvement of Dicalcium Phosphate Dihydrate with Fluoride for Its Removal from Waste and Drinking Water
Dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) reacts with fluoride ion in an aqueous solution and forms stable fluoroapatite (FAp). This reaction requires a lag time to form nano-sized precursor, hydroxyapatite (HAp)-like calcium phosphate, on DCPD surface. This long lag time prevents DCPD from applying as an effective fluoride removal agent from waste water. The purpose of this study is to improve the ...
متن کاملRemoval of fluoride ion by bone char produced from animal biomass.
Bone char (BC) was prepared by carbonizing four types of animal biomass, and the adsorption of fluoride ions and elution of phosphate ions were investigated. It was found that the BC yield decreased as carbonization temperature increased, and that carbonization temperature had no significant effect on surface pH, base or acid consumptions. Fluoride ion adsorption was increased in BC produced at...
متن کاملMeasurement of Fluoride Concentration in Semnan Drinking Water Distribution
Background: The existence of fluoride ion in potable water has distinctive effects on human health. Fluoride is attracted by positively charged calcium in teeth and bones due to its strong electro-negativity which results in dental, skeletal, and non-skeletal forms of xuorosis and associated health complaints in children as well as adults. Methods: Water samples from groundwater used for dri...
